Back in January 2018, when the idea of opening a store was brewing in my mind, I came across a company while cruising through Instagram. What caught me was their packaging to be honest, on some lip balms, it was bright, colorful and made me smile!
After emailing back and forth, and of course jumping on each others social media, my first order of product from Sheridan Soap Company arrived, and who knew I would LOVE soap so much?!
I want to introduce you to Sean and Christine Anderson, the Makers behind Sheridan Soap Company, and I hope you stop in the store (when we open) to try out their lotions, lip balms and other products we will be carrying. This is a company built with integrity and honesty, and a product that is good for our bodies and soul.
When did you begin Sheridan Soap Company? 2016
Where are you located? Sheridan Wyoming of course!
How did you come up with your business name? Is there a story behind the name? Christine and our daughters had taken a soap making class from a local soap maker. Since we value knowing how to make things from scratch and we are super careful about what we put in and on our bodies, it was a natural fit. The local soap maker was preparing to retire and was selling her business to a young Amish woman who lived in a community by the famous Devil’s Tower in Wyoming. The young Amish woman ended up turning down the business saying, “making cold-processed lye soap was too old-fashion for her and she was looking for something less labor intensive.” We still laugh out loud when re-telling the story! She asked us about purchasing the company from her. After praying about it, God confirmed it was what we were to do next. The soap maker called her business “Simple Joys” and she wanted to keep the name. We had 2 names chosen, we took a family and friend vote, and Sheridan Soap Company was the winner!
What type of business do you have? Do you sell a product or service? Both! Our products include: soaps in various sizes and scents, body creams, lip balms, and per request we make body scrubs and bath salt soaks. Our services include: hospitality soaps for dude ranches, white labels products, & soap making classes.
Tell me about your product? Why do you think it is the best!? Homemade bread always beats out store bought bread and homemade soap will always beat out store bought soap. No gimmicks, it’s just really, really, really good. Your skin is the largest organ on your body, it only makes scents (pun intended) to be mindful of what you put onto and into your skin. Everything we make is only comprised of pure natural products that feed your skin. Almost everything we use in our body care products we also cook with in our kitchen, it’s THAT pure and THAT good. Think of it as feeding your skin.
Do own a store? Only sell wholesale? Sell online? We sell wholesale and online.
Do you have employees? Or is this a solo act?!We are a dynamic duo with several little hands that like to help out on occasion!! We are hoping to grow in this coming year to possibly provide employment opportunities for others.
How long have you been in business? We purchased the business at the beginning of 2016.
What made you want to start a business? Our beautiful children! We homeschool and wanted a small, simple, at-home business to teach them how business gets done. The soap company allows them to learn so much from product development, to manufacturing, to branding, to retailing and the flow of finances. The little soap company grew much quicker than we expected and has allowed dad to become the master soapmaker!
What are you most passionate about in regards to your business? Providing good food for your skin! Did you know that most “soaps” on supermarket shelves cannot legally be called soap? Look closely at the packaging next time you’re at the store and you’ll see “beauty bars”, “moisturizing bars”, “body scrubs”, “detergents”, but rarely SOAP. Think about it, dish and laundry detergents remove oils, but we don’t want the oils removed from our skin, just the dirt. Stripping your skin’s natural protective oils puts your skin in a constant struggle to keep up. Real soap leaves your skin’s natural oils intact and feeds your skin with additional oils that nourish it...not only giving your skin a break, but giving it a BOOST! Soapmaking is a bit scientific, as the lye reacts to the oils and the butters a beautiful thing happens called saponification. The scientific result is skin-nourishing glycerine! Combine this with only essential oils, non- genetically modified oils, and butters, and what you get is something that can’t be beat! However, as not all handmade lye soaps are of the same quality, having a great carefully crafted recipe makes a big difference.
One of the main reasons we bought the company from the local retiring soapmaker was her recipe was so good. We found out from her that it is a recipe over 15 years old. Being a retired science teacher, I went to work streamlining and fine-tuning our measurements and processes to insure a fantastic result every time! We also improved the recipe to be 100% non-GMO and include organic and fair-trade ingredients and finished it all off by beveling every edge of every bar for a smooth luxurious feel from the very first use!
We want everyone to experience the benefits of real soap. It’s all so good for you and for your skin! You can feel the difference of our handcrafted soap! Our soap is really, really, really good! No gimmicks, it’s just that good!
What is a piece of advice you would give to someone thinking about starting a business?Pray about it and count the costs. Never compromise your values and integrity.
What has been your biggest challenge in business? Finding our target audience. At first we thought, “well everyone uses soap so this should be easy to sell.” Then we learned the importance of finding your target audience.
What has been your biggest win in business? One of our dude ranch accounts upped their order from 3000 bars to 12000 bars in our first year of business! That was a lot of little bars of soap and a huge boost to our confidence!
Do you just love these two! I can't wait to one day meet them.
